I was going to write about how Donald Trump's reelection and inauguration is one that should have never happened but it did due to a failure on many fronts and there is plenty of blame to go around. But I already wrote that post a couple of days after Election Day so I suggest reading that one instead because I haven't really changed my opinion since I originally wrote it.
The upcoming three-day Inauguration Day weekend in Washington, DC is going to be a complete circus full of clowns. Here's a rundown of what's scheduled to happen. (Keep in mind that there's always the possibility that one or more events could be canceled at the last minute, with the exception of the inauguration ceremony itself. That one is required to be held by the US Constitution.)
January 18: The Women's March is among the organizers of a People's March that will take place on the streets of DC. As a veteran of the Women's March in 2017 and 2018, I had already openly expressed my feelings about this march and, no, I won't be there. So moving right along…
January 19: Usually Inauguration Day itself is the big event. But, in an unprecedented move, Donald Trump has announced that he will hold a victory rally on the day before at the Capitol One Arena in Washington, DC. This brings back memories of when Trump held rallies throughout his previous presidency even in non-election years because he apparently has this insatiable need to bask in the love of his hardcore MAGA supporters. I only hope that the Capitol One Arena got paid upfront since Trump has a history of not paying venues who hosted his previous rallies.
January 20: It's Inauguration Day itself and it also happens to be Martin Luther King Day, which is pretty ironic given Trump's history of racism. There will be a variety of musical acts who are scheduled to perform on this day including Carrie Underwood, The Village People, Kid Rock, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Lee Greenwood, and Christopher Macchio.
Happening simultaneously with the inauguration of Donald Trump is a previously announced counterprotest called We Fight Back. The scheduled speakers for that one include Jill Stein, the Green Party presidential candidate who is pro-Putin, and who ran as the self-proclaimed “only anti-genocide candidate” who made the Israeli bombing in Gaza the main centerpiece of her campaign. She is also an investor in Raytheon, one of the largest defense contractors in the world who has made the weapons used on the Palestinians in Gaza that has resulted in the killings of Palestinians she had denounced as the “only anti-genocide candidate.”
I live near Washington, DC and I can easily take Metro to those events. But I plan to stay in the Maryland suburbs during that time because I don't want to deal with any of these clowns in person. I've seen posts on social media calling for a complete boycott of the inauguration. This means no traveling to downtown DC to attend in person (including any and all counterprotests), no watching it on TV, no listening to it on the radio, and no streaming online. Just a total boycott. That is one response to the incoming second Trump Administration that I can easily get behind. I think I'll just watch a movie on Inauguration Day instead.
The big irony is that Donald Trump will literally be moving into hostile territory because the people in the Baltimore-DC area are just as hostile towards him as the people in New York and New Jersey. There are numerous reasons for this, starting with the biggest being Donald Trump's role in the violent riot that took place at the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021. It's no wonder that Maryland, Virginia, and DC all went for Kamala Harris in last November's election. We still have the raw memories of how Trump treated us and we attempted to prevent his return to the White House. (It's too bad that enough voters in other states didn't do the same.) In addition, as a convicted felon, Trump won't be able to travel to many countries because they tend not to allow felons to enter. His world for the foreseeable future will probably be limited to just the White House with frequent golfing trips to his own Trump clubs in the United States. Well, he brought this all on himself and I hope that he's miserable that his history of poor choices have come to bite him in his fat ass.
