Radical Political Rhetoric That Broke My Brain
A rationalization on why Iran's Woman, Life, Freedom movement is less important than Palestine and confronting the big, bad old USA
Sometimes I don't even know why I even bother to venture on to Twitter/X. Ever since Elon Musk has bought it that platform has become a dumpsterfire of incredibly bad political takes from both the far-left and the far-right (which dovetails nicely with a previous post I made about the Horseshoe Theory).
Calla Walsh is a 19-year-old activist and student at McGill University who first got into politics before she could legally vote by campaigning for Senator Ed Markey's election. After the 2020 election she got involved in leftist politics by joining the Democratic Socialists of America and becoming a co-chair of the National Network on Cuba, a group that's affiliated with United For Peace & Justice. She has also gotten heavily involved with an anti-Israeli group known as Palestine Action US while taking part in the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction) movement.
Calla Walsh became famous nationwide last October when she was part of a group that broke into the Cambridge, Massachusetts offices of the Israeli defense contractor known as Elbit Systems then vandalized the property while exhibiting disorderly conduct. It was basically a protest against Israel bombing Gaza on a continuous basis (since the Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel on October 7) while breaking the law and engaging in some property damage. She has been formally indicted on felony charges and, if convicted, could face somewhere between three-and-half to seven years in prison.
She has continued with attending McGill University while dealing with the upcoming trial. She also frequently posts on social media where some of her beliefs had me go WTF?!? Basically she is very heavily involved in being pro-Palestine and anti-Israel. She has denounced US policy towards Russia (especially in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine) as being “part of a racist double standard” and she has said that China is not the enemy and considers the US government's investigation of TikTok to be xenophobic.
But her most recent social media posts have totally erupted Twitter/X and she was thrown into the spotlight once again. Basically she seems not to be a fan on Iran's Woman, Life, Freedom movement, which had sprung up last year after a young woman named Mahsa Amini was brutally murdered by Iran's morality police last year because the morality police objected to the way that she wore her hijab.
Calla Walsh had this to say about Woman, Life, Freedom as well as any ongoing movements against the Asad regime in Syria: “Westerners don't want to hear this, but supporting Palestine is incompatible with supporting regime change in Iran or Syria. If ‘woman life freedom’ succeeded & overthrew the sovereign govt of Iran, there'd be no Axis of Resistance as we know it to resist US-Zionist imperialism.”
Calla Walsh has apparently decided that Palestinian lives matter more than the the lives of those who live in Iran and Syria. What's more, without Iran's Islamic government, who would be there to provide resistance to those pesky Americans and Zionists who are out to rule and ruin the world. You oppressed Iranians and Syrians need to just suck it up and continue to live docile lives under authoritarian dictatorships.
She made a follow-up tweet where she doubled down on what she previously tweeted, “If you want to support women in Iran from the US, the best thing you can do is demand an end to US sanctions and military aggression. Frankly, Iran's internal contradictions are not our business, and Iranians can resolve them on their own without imperialist interference.”
According to Calla Walsh the rest of the world needs to just shut up while Iran continues to oppress its own citizens. The Islamic regime needs to continue in its present form since they are a backer of Hamas, the terrorist group that rules Gaza. So what if women like Mahsa Amini die for no real reason? The ends justify the means since Palestinian lives matter more than Iranians (especially Iranian women).
Here are just a few of the mostly negative responses to what Calla Walsh wrote.
If I were in Calla Walsh's shoes, I would be more focused on just two things: college classes and the upcoming trial. Especially since she is facing felony charges that could land her in prison. The stuff she posts on Twitter/X would be fodder for a prosecutor who is trying to have her serve as much time in jail as possible. If she wants to have a chance of getting into a judge's good graces, she should completely avoid posting anywhere online until after her trial.
The most galling thing about her posts is this, she is a woman who is telling other women that their protests to get a new government that actually respects women doesn't matter at all. The rights of Iranian women matter less than the plight of the Palestinians. Calla Walsh is a woman who is essentially saying that equal rights for all women, no matter where they live, is simply not important at all.
