Day 1 of the DNC Convention in Chicago

Here are the highlights from the first day of the DNC. It started with this rousing version of “The Star Spangled Banner” that was performed by The Soul Children of Chicago.

Highlights from the first day included a speech by President Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton that seems to symbolize a passing of the torch to the next generation of Democratic leaders.

The end of that video included the Free Palestine protests that happened outside of the convention. So far it looks like it wasn't a repeat of the antiwar protests that turned violent that took place outside of the last DNC Convention that was held in Chicago back in 1968 and that's probably a good thing. Especially since that 1968 convention led to the election of Richard Nixon and he kept the Vietnam War going for another few years.

I also noticed that a majority of the protesters who were in that video footage are white. I didn't see anyone of Arab or Palestinian descent in that video footage. I think I might have seen one African American protester but the protesters in Chicago are overwhelmingly white. Is there some kind of a white savior complex going on here?

One thing is for sure. One of the protest groups who is participating in the Chicago protests, the Samidoun Network, has a social media account that's based in Iran.

It also looks like this protest was relatively small, judging from this photo posted on Twitter/X that was taken an hour after the protest march began showing piles of unclaimed signs that weren't even picked up and used.

As for me, while I'm horrified at the indescriminate bombings and killings that are currently happening in Gaza, as an American I am more worried about the possibility that Trump will be elected where he has threatened to rule as a dictator and Project 2025 will be implemented. As someone who is not a white, cis, heterosexual, Christian Nationalist man who came from an upperclass background, I will be more directly affected by Project 2025 than the bombing in Gaza. I wish I have the luxury to spend the bulk of my free time fighting the horror that's being unleashed in Gaza but I simply don't.

And speaking of Trump, the first night of the convention showed this video empathizing the fact that Donald Trump is the first convicted felon to run for president in US history.

Meanwhile far-right so-called “journalist” James O'Keefe issued this tweet indicating that he plans to do an “expose” of the DNC at the convention and he's looking for people to do “undercover work.”

Anyone seriously considering working with him should be made aware of his history of violating journalism ethics through the use of such things as selective editing. There's a reason why Project Veritas, the nonprofit group he founded that specialized in exposes on any person or organization deemed “too liberal,” had shut down last year.

And then there's another far-right so-called “journalist” Laura Loomer. Last night First Lady Dr. Jill Biden spoke at the DNC Convention and Loomer made this nasty tweet condemning Dr. Biden for referring to her late stepson Beau as “our son Beau” while also claiming that Dr. Biden was having an affair with Joe Biden when his first wife died.

As for President Biden's first wife, she and their one-year-old daughter died in a car crash in 1972. (Their two sons, who were also in that car, were seriously injured.) Joe Biden met his future second wife, Jill, on a blind date in 1975—three years after that fatal car crash. There was no affair going on between Joe and Jill when his first wife died. A quick look on the Wikipedia would've confirmed that for Laura Loomer.

Yes Dr. Biden was really Beau's stepmother and not his biological mother but it shouldn't really matter whether she actually gave birth to Beau or not. The fact is that she raised Beau and his brother Hunter as if they were her biological sons. This is the same kind of horrible argument that the far-right have lobbed against Kamala Harris for only having stepchildren and not biological children.

Yet these people seem to overlook this one fact: Do you know which other president only had stepchildren and not biological children? George Washington, the first President of the United States who is also known as The Father of Our Country. His wife Martha was a widow when they were married and she had two children from her previous marriage. He not only helped Martha with raising them but he also helped with raising two of his stepgrandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. George and Martha didn't have any biological children together. You can easily look that one up yourself.

Laura Loomer making an issue of this says a lot more about her than Dr. Jill Biden. And that's not to mention that Laura Loomer is a big fan of Russia and Vladimir Putin.
