Using a Tragedy in Baltimore to Score Cheap Propaganda Points

Some people are trying to connect Joe Biden, Ukraine, and Gaza to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge

In the very wee hours of this morning an unspeakable tragedy happened in Baltimore. A container ship from Singapore accidentally slammed into one of the supports of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the entire bridge to collapse. Several vehicles were crossing the bridge at that time and a number of them have been spotted in the water of the Patapsco River below.

The loss of life due to that bridge's collapse is horrifying and I really feel awful for the victims and their families. The only silver lining is that it happened overnight when there were fewer vehicles on the highways. Had this tragedy occurred during weekday rush hour, the loss of life would've been far greater.

As someone who lives in the Baltimore-DC area, I can tell you how much of a disaster that bridge collapse is. It is part of I-695 (a.k.a the Baltimore Beltway) which means that traffic will be severely impaired for months to come, especially during rush hour. Baltimore is a port city which is heavily reliant on the shipping trade. All of those ships coming to and from Baltimore will have to be re-routed away from the bridge area.

Admist all this sadness there are pro-Putin and pro-Trump supporters who are now using this accident to make disgusting posts on social media (especially on Twitter/X) that blame the tragedy on such unrelated issues as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, so-called “woke ideology”, President Joe Biden, and unique conspiracy theories that have no basis in what really happened early this morning. Here are just a few of them.

Then there are certain people who are sharing this video that supposedly shows the collapse of the Key Bridge from another angle and it shows an explosion. Actually that video was shot at a different bridge, the Kerch Bridge that connects Russia to Crimea, and that explosion was caused by a Ukrainian missile fire.

For all of the naysayers out there, President Joe Biden is already dealing with the Key Bridge collapse.

Of course it won't be enough to convince the hardcore pro-Putin/pro-Trump crowd but hopefully it'll persuade more moderate folks that, yes, President Biden is aware of the tragedy and he's working on it right now.
