The Latest Propaganda Trick: Haitians are Eating Pets in Ohio!
Cats and ducks are especially in danger!
Here is what social media was like yesterday.
Substack Notes: This week's upcoming debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
Spoutible: This week's upcoming debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
Bluesky: A variety of topics ranging from the arts to politics.
Facebook: My friends’ and relatives’ pictures of their everyday lives.
Threads: A variety of topics including scenes from people's personal lives and why job hunting is way more difficult than it used to be.
Twitter/X: Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio are breaking into people's homes, stealing their pets and eating them! Cats and ducklings are especially vulnerable!
WTF?!? I wish I was kidding about this but that Haitian story has been spreading like wildfire. It has led to people churning out AI graphics full of sad-eyed animals dreading the thought of being eaten, with some of them urging people to stop this by voting for Trump. It had even led to the hashtag #HaitiansEatHousepets.
This story was even promoted by Donald Trump's current vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance. Even though this story has been thoroughly debunked by several different news outlets, this story still persisted on Twitter/X, complete with AI graphics depicting Donald Trump rescuing animals Rambo-style. Never mind the fact that Trump has never had a buff muscular body and he has never owned a pet.
There was a time before Elon Musk purchased Twitter/X when moderators would've cracked down on such posts promoting misinformation. But with Elon Musk laying off most of these moderators, it has not only become a free-for-all in terms of rumors, misinformation, and outright lies but Musk himself is literally fanning the flames by tweeting and retweeting this story.
This whole “Haitian immigrants are eating pets” thing is playing off both anti-immigrant sentiments and racism, especially the same old “black people are savages” trope. It's not surprising that Elon Musk, who grew up in South Africa under apartheid, would be eager to promote this.
We also can't discount the idea that this is the latest Kremlin propaganda trick. Think about this. Donald Trump has long had close ties to the Kremlin. The GOP and the Kremlin are close these days. Elon Musk is close with the Kremlin.
The reason why the Kremlin would do this is to deflect from the recent Justice Department indictments regarding RT and TENET Media, which had included far-right commentators like Dave Rubin and Tim Pool. It's also timed to coincide with tonight's upcoming presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
In a nutshell, the main purpose of this fake “Haitian immigrants are eating pets” story is to sow chaos and discord. The closer we get to the US election, expect to see more stuff like this. The only thing you can do is to ignore it and try to convince your friends and family that this is not true. Everytime a story like this gains traction in mainstream American society, Vladimir Putin wins.
