Scenes From the Rally to Commemorate the Second Anniversary of Russia's Invasion of Ukraine in Washington, DC
Yesterday Washington, DC was one of the many cities around the world where rallies were held to commemorate the second anniversary of the day that Russia invaded Ukraine. I attended that rally and I shot photos and video footage that I’d like to share here.
I took the DC Metro (which is the name of the subway system) to Foggy Bottom which empties out on the campus of George Washington University.
I walked past the window of one of the campus buildings that displayed the Missing flyers that highlighted the Israelis who were kidnapped by Hamas during the terrorist attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023 (and many of whom remain in captivity).
I knew I was on the right path to my destination when I saw this person waving the Ukrainian flag.
I finally made it to my destination. The rally was held outside of the Lincoln Memorial. Here are a few photos of the people who were all decked out in blue and yellow while waving Ukrainian flags. (I also saw a few Georgian flags at that rally as well.)
I had brought a portable chair with me, which came in handy because I’ve been dealing with both arthritis and this recent bout of cold dank weather. (In fact it even drizzled during the rally, which made the cold seem even colder.) I had someone offer to take my picture with my camera and I took her up on it. Here are the photos of me that she shot.
The rally ended with a protest march. I ended up not joining it because my legs had grown so stiff from the cold and the rain that I didn’t think I could handle it. Here’s a photo of the marchers leaving the Lincoln Memorial.
With much of the crowd gone, I took a few more pictures of what remained. They had a giant inflatable globe that was in the blue and yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag.
I ended my time there with taking a few shots of this woman who had this most incredible outfit. She had these wings with a long trailing Ukrainian flag. She looked like a Ukrainian angel.
I also shot some video footage of the day’s event, which you can view below.
It was a very solemn and moving event. I’m glad I went even if my legs were aching a lot from the cold and the rain. (My legs were aching so badly that I ended up taking the DC Circulator, which has a stop right at the Lincoln Memorial, to Union Station where I took the next DC Metro train home.)
