If you’re relatively new to the issues related to Kremlin propaganda and how it’s affecting other countries (including the United States), I recommend reading some background posts I wrote that explains things in more detail along with links to other sites where you can read more to educate yourself.
Despite being the son of a US president, Hunter Biden has had a rough life. At the age of two he was riding in a car that was involved in a horrific car crash with a tractor trailer truck. Hunter and his older brother Beau both survived but the crash killed his mother and younger sister. He later developed a drug problem and he had to deal with the early death of his 46-year-old brother Beau from cancer.
The origins of Hunter Biden's current problems began when he served on the board of Burisma Holdings, one of the largest private natural gas producers in Ukraine. Burisima Holdings is owned by Ukrainian oligarch and former politician Mykola Zlochevsky, who was facing a money laundering investigation just after the Ukrainian Maidan Revolution of Dignity in 2014. That association was all that the GOP needed to go after Hunter Biden and, by extension, his father Joe. It provided the backbone for the Biden-Ukraine conspiracy theory.
It was Donald Trump's obsession with taking out a potential rival for the 2020 election that led to his first impeachment. He attempted to blackmail Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy into finding dirt on both Joe and Hunter Biden in exchange for releasing the military aid that had already been allocated to Ukraine. The Republicans in the Senate opted not to convict Trump despite the evidence that was presented.
It has come out that Joe and Hunter Biden's alleged crooked connections with Ukraine is yet another example of Russian disinformation that's designed to sow chaos in the United States in an effort to get Donald Trump reelected. This week the shit really hit the fan when it turned out that a former FBI informant named Alexander Smirnov was arrested on charges of making false allegations that were at the heart of the GOP's impeachment inquiry of Joe Biden. Smirnov falsely told FBI agents in 2020 that officials with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid Joe and Hunter Biden $5 million each in 2015 or 2016. Smirnov now claims that he received fake information from Russian intelligence.
Meanwhile in Ukraine the government has charged officials tied with both the Hunter Biden probe and Russia of treason.
There are two takeaways with thus ongoing story. One is that the Russian government is going to great lengths to destabilize the United States so it will be no longer a major rival to Russia so Vladimir Putin can focus on his big ambition of resurrecting the old Russian Empire. Two is that the GOP is willing to do everything possible to destroy democracy (including collaborating with Vladimir Putin) and recreate something similar to the old Confederate States of America. (For more details, you can read a previous post I wrote showing how the GOP has evolved from being staunchly against the communist Soviet Union to being very chummy with Vladimir Putin.)
