You're a Westerner who's sitting at home feeling helpless against Vladimir Putin's warmongering in Ukraine along with his threats to do the same to other nations like Moldova and Georgia. If you're British you're probably still sore at Russia over influencing the Brexit vote. If you're an American you're probably outraged over the Putin-allied cronies in Congress along with the Russian troll farms actively trying their best to make sure that Putin's preferred candidate, Donald Trump, gets reelected in November. You want to do something but you don't know what you can do. Here are a few things that you can do.
Join the International Legion for the Defense of Ukraine. You can travel to Ukraine and fight against the Russians just like 1984 author George Orwell did in Spain when he fought against the fascists during the Spanish Civil War (which he later recounted in his classic memoir Homage to Catalonia). However there are certain requirements that you must meet, such as being between the ages of 18-60, being in good physical health, and not having a criminal record. They also prefer people with previous military experience. Keep in mind that there is always the chance that you could die in battle so if you actually get selected, I highly recommend hiring a lawyer to help you with writing a will in case the worst happens to you. If you feel that you have what it takes to fight for Ukraine and you're mentally prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice, you can apply here.
There are other ways of helping Ukraine besides going on the battlefield and they are suitable alternatives for those who are unable to join the International Legion for the Defense of Ukraine. (And that's not to mention that you're less likely to die while engaging in these activities.)
Are you heavily into computers and technology and you're comfortable with using commands like grep and sudo? The IT Army of Ukraine is definitely for you. You can engage in cyberwarfare against designated Russian targets from the comfortof your own home without ever needing to travel to Ukraine. It's also easier to join than the International Legion for the Defense of Ukraine. All you need is a computer along with some IT technical knowledge and you can be fighting against Russia on the cyber frontline. Here are some links to get you started: website and Telegram.
Do you have a basic working knowledge of the internet and social media but don't have the advanced knowledge of an IT person? NAFO is right up your alley.
NAFO/OFAN, which is not to be confused with NATO/OTAN, is a group of people located all over the world who engage in information warfare on social media against Russians and pro-Russian Westerners. The group's name is known in English as the North Atlantic Fella Organization (NAFO) and in French as Organisation des Fella d’Atlantique Nord (OFAN). The group refer to each other as “fellas” (including female members—this is one of the few instances where the usually masculine term is used as a gender-neutral term). They use the Shiba Ina dog as its symbol, which is why members of the group will sometimes refer to themselves as “cartoon dogs.”
NAFO is engaged in two activities. One is to fundraise on behalf of Ukraine's defenders. The majority of the proceeds from the merchandise they sell in their online shop goes to these defenders.
The other is to openly attack obviously pro-Russian propaganda, most notably on Twitter/X. They do it using memes and snarky humor. The work is relatively easy yet effective and the schedule is very flexible. You can work as much or as little as you want.
Here are a few links to help get you started: website, Telegram, Twitter/X, Facebook, Discord, Reddit, and the NAFO Forum.
Self-education on a regular basis. With the situation constantly changing on a continuous basis, being as informed as possible can be a challenge. But it's imperative that you do everything to keep yourself informed on everything, including what is Russia's latest propaganda tactics and how to spot them. I have a series of post in this Substack that provides all kinds of basic information for people who consider themselves to be newbies. The basic posts range from what is propaganda to a brief history of Ukraine, to understanding why there is a connection between the current Israel-Hamas war and the Russia-Ukraine war. You can access my series right here.
An even more extensive resource is Vatnik Soup, which is a database of some of the biggest apologists for Vladimir Putin and Russia. These people include a number of famous people like Donald Trump, Roger Waters, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and even that Gen-Z Lord Haw-Haw Jackson Hinkle. Vatnik Soup gets updated on a regular basis so it's definitely worth bookmarking it.
