You should consider yourself lucky that you're not Donald Trump. Even if this week was really bad for you, it's still not as bad as what Donald Trump went through. How bad had this past week been for Donald Trump? Here are the highlights from his bad week.
New Trump Biopic Debuts at Cannes
The Apprentice, a biopic about Donald Trump's early years in the real estate business, made its recent debut at the Cannes Film Festival despite the filmmakers receiving a cease and desist letter from one of Trump's attorneys. Apparently this movie deals with some of the less savory aspects of Trump’s early life (such as a scene where Donald rapes his first wife Ivana), which probably explains the cease and desist letter. The film was shown as originally scheduled and it received an eight-minute standing ovation after it premiered. As of this writing there's no word on when this film will get a wider release in more movie theaters around the world but it has already received its own Wikipedia page.
Donald Trump Gets Booed By the Libertarians
During the Memorial Day holiday weekend Donald Trump was invited to speak at the Libertarian Party convention in Washington, DC. He attempted to do what he has done at many of his campaign rallies—get his MAGA believers to take all of the front row seats. Then Trump would use this bogus “Libertarian” crowd to “prove” that he's popular among the Libertarians.
The big problem is that these seats were reserved for the Libertarian delegates but Trump and his MAGA supporters decided to ignore that fact as people took seats that they weren't entitled to. The Libertarians became so incensed at Trump's attempt to take over their own convention that they weren't going to have it. The Libertarian delegates formed a standing wall at the front that would block the view of the Trump supporters. Then more Libertarian delegates entered the room and managed to kick out all of the Trump supporters from the front row so the Libertarians took back their reserved seats. When the MAGA supporters started to chant “TRUMP! TRUMP! TRUMP!” the Libertarians drowned them out with boos.
As a result, when Donald Trump finally went onstage to give his speech, he seemed shocked by the very frosty reception. Let's face it, he has gotten so used to seeing carefully curated adoring MAGA supporters at his rallies that it must have been super-traumatizing for him to hear boos at his own speech while that speech was being recorded on video for posterity.
There's another video that shows different sections of Trump's speech, which also elicited boos from the Libertarians.
That disastrous speech wasn't enough. The following day the Libertarians got back at Trump for trying to stack his speech with adoring MAGA supporters by humiliating him even further.
Even though Trump asked the Libertarian Party to nominate him for president on their platform, they ultimately decided to go with one of their own instead—Chase Oliver.
I have never been a supporter of the Libertarian Party but I now have a new respect for them because they are willing to stand up against him instead of constantly trying to appease him like the GOP has done since 2016. If people like Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham have had the guts of the Libertarians and actually stood up to Trump and gone through with the impeachment for his role in the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, Trump would’ve been prohibited from ever running for public office again and the American people wouldn't have to deal with Trump’s threat to rule as a dictator if he gets elected in November.
A Comparison Between Two Different Memorial Day Messages
This past Monday was Memorial Day. As you may remember, during Donald Trump's time in the White House he was impeached twice. The second time was for his role in the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. But his first impeachment was for his attempt to blackmail Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy into finding damaging information on Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
Both men wrote special messages for Memorial Day. One wrote his message while still trying to deal with Russia's invasion of his country and posted it on Twitter/X. The other wrote his message right after his disastrous appearance at the Libertarian Convention and posted it on Truth Social. Read the below messages and judge for yourself which Memorial Day message do you think is better.
One of Trump's Many Trials Has Come to an End
I've been ignoring all of Trump's court cases because there are so many of them that it's overwhelming with four criminal cases and one civil case. So far his legal team have successfully pushed back the start of some of his trials until after the election. But New York State is forging ahead and refusing to give any kind of deference to the New York native Trump, which has resulted in history being made as Donald Trump is the first president—both former and current—to ever face a criminal trial.
This one is about the hush-money trial where Trump is accused of getting his then-attorney Michael Cohen to pay porn actress Stormy Daniels money before the 2016 election to keep quiet about a brief sexual fling Trump had with her while his wife Melania was recuperating from recently giving birth to their son Barron. The Stormy Daniels story started to come to light soon after the notorious Access Hollywood tapes also came to light. (That's the one that includes Trump's infamous “Grab them by the pussy” quote.) The charge is that Trump wanted Cohen to bribe Daniels to deny the affair and to keep quiet because of a fear that her telling her story would shock Trump's very conservative Christian supporters so much that it would affect the outcome of the 2016 election.
Coming after the Access Hollywood tapes, Stormy Daniels’ revelations would have been the final nail in the coffin for Trump's presidential campaign had she publicly spoken about them in 2016. While the defense claims that they wanted to keep Daniels quiet in order to spare Melania Trump's feelings, the prosecution has maintained that these payments were made in order to affect the outcome of the 2016 election.
For more information, here is this timeline of the case, which includes all kinds of details about the investigation and the trial itself.
And Now For the Pièce de Résistance of Donald Trump’s Horrible Week
Today he was found guilty on all counts. His sentencing is scheduled for July 11. Of course he'll immediately appeal this verdict but it still won't take away from the fact that Donald Trump is the first president—current or former—to have been tried on criminal charges and get convicted of a felony.
Here's hoping that it will affect the outcome of the November election and Donald Trump won't regain the White House. Convicted felons can't vote in elections so it would be unfair to allow a convicted felon like Donald Trump to run for public office. There should be some changes to the law that would bar felons from running for or holding public office.
At this point, I would even support the Libertarian Party over Donald Trump if it would save the US from becoming a Putin-style dictatorship. (I'll probably end up voting for Joe Biden since he has the best chance of winning over Trump. He's mostly done a decent job with cleaning up Trump's messes.) Trump needs to just leave politics for good.
