This week is a religious one. For Muslims it is part of the holy month of Ramadan. For Christians it is Holy Week with today being Good Friday and it will culminate on Easter Sunday.
I'm reminded of my late mother-in-law's second husband, who was a very staunch Episcopalian who was also very active in his church. His big interest was in collecting the various different editions of the Bible. He had the King James Version and he also had various more modern translations. I used to see them on a couple of bookshelves in the den of their home whenever my then-husband and I visited them in Phoenix (where they lived). The various editions ranged from very elaborate hardcover volumes to paperback editions. He had versions of the Bible that were rewritten for young children. I remember there was even an edition that had an introduction that was written by Bono, the lead singer of U2, even though he was a senior citizen whose music tastes ran towards classical music and he was not a fan of rock music.
My mother-in-law passed in 2010 and her husband died in 2018. But the recent news had got me thinking about his extensive Bible collection once again.
This week of holy reverence for Muslims and Christians have also been an incredibly busy week for Donald Trump. An appeals court had slashed Trump’s bond payment from $454 million to $175 million. (The bond payment requirement came as a result of civil fraud allegations from New York Attorney General Letitia James.) His Truth Social social media platform went public on Wall Street and shares closed at $57.99, which currently makes the company worth $4.6 billion. He had a total gag order placed on him for his upcoming hush money trial.
If all that weren’t enough, Donald Trump and country singer Lee Greenwood are jointly selling a Bible that costs nearly $60. It is bound in what looks like leather or faux leather that has the book title and an image of the American flag embossed on it. This special Bible not only has the Old and New Testaments but it also includes the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the lyrics to Greenwood's best-known song, “God Bless the USA.”
This Trump Bible comes on the heels of his Trump Sneakers line, whose flagship product is a pair of butt-ugly gold sneakers, which initially went on sale for $399 but the price later dropped to $99.
Trump's promo video for this new special Bible is absolutely bonkers, especially with his tag line “Make America Pray Again.” That video looks like something that Saturday Night Live could have done with Alec Baldwin as the Bible-holding Trump.
This is the same Donald Trump who, in a 2015 interview, said that the Bible was his favorite book. When he was asked to share his favorite Bible verse, he declined to do so.
And if you think that this extra-special Bible is one that Trump and Greenwood had actually collaborated on together, you're wrong. Apparently this Bible was originally created without Trump’s involvement back in 2021 as a tie-in with both Greenwood's “God Bless the USA” song and the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York, DC, and Pennsylvania. It led to a backlash among Christians that was so huge that this proposed Bible edition was ultimately shelved. Three years later this Bible has been revived thanks to Donald Trump.
It's pretty ironic that Trump is embracing Christianity and selling Bibles because his ex-lawyer, Michael Cohen, wrote in his Disloyal book about how Trump once called Christianity as “bullshit” and he called Christians “fools, “idiots,” and “schmucks.”
Is Trump is moral enough for anyone to seriously considering buying one of his Bibles? Especially since Trump has bragged about never apologizing for anything while traditional Christianity has always emphasized expressing remorse and always apologize for doing something wrong. One could go through the entire Bible looking for quotes to compare against Trump's actions. For simplicity reasons, I'm just going to base Trump’s behavior as outlined in only one part of the Bible that can be found in the Book of Exodus, verses 3-17: The Ten Commandments.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Maybe Trump has never been seen worshipping alternate gods like Zeus or Odin but he does seem to be more obsessed with money and appearing very wealthy than praying to God on a regular basis.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images. If I used this site's definition of “graven images” as things like cars, clothes, and careers, Donald Trump has definitely violated that one throughout most of his life. His butt-ugly penthouse at Trump Tower in New York City alone is a graven image nightmare.
Thou shalt not take the name of thy Lord God in vain. He has definitely violated that one at least once and his penchant for not keeping his language clean has gotten him into past trouble with some evangelicals.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Trump has never been seen going to church on Sundays on a regular basis. How good is Trump at being holy? According to his niece, Mary Trump, he has never prayed in his life and if that Bible he was holding in his promo video were real, it would burst into a ball of flame.
Honor thy father and thy mother. As for that one Donald Trump had a more distant relationship with his mother. He referred to his father as his hero, role model, and best friend and he even kept a framed photo of his father in the Oval Office when he was president. Despite his professed admiration for his father, he attempted to gain total control over his aging father's estate around the same time as he was facing the first of his multiple bankruptcies and going through an expensive divorce from his first wife Ivana. His father was in the early stages of struggling with cognitive decline, which made Donald Trump's attempted seizure of his father's estate a very far cry from honoring him.
Thou shalt not kill. Okay I'll admit that there is no solid evidence that Donald Trump has ever committed murder.
Thou shalt not commit adultery. He has violated that one numerous times. He cheated on his first wife Ivana with his future second wife Marla Maples. About a year after his second marriage broke up, he started dating his future third wife Melania. While Melania was recovering from giving birth to the couple's son Barron, Donald had a brief fling with porn star Stormy Daniels and a 10-month affair with ex-Playboy model Karen McDougal. If that weren’t enough, there are numerous women who have accused Trump of rape and sexual assault.
Thou shalt not steal. He has a habit of not paying his contractors and lawyers for work they've done for him, which is wage theft and it is a form of stealing.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. He has a habit of lying. He demonstrated such a frequency of lying during his time in the White House that the various news media outlets have documented his lies numbering in the thousands.
Thou shalt not covet. In the 1980s Trump coveted Mar-a-Lago, a Spanish-style mansion that was once the winter home of cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post. By that time Post had been dead for a number of years and her heirs were trying to sell the home. Trump offered $15 million for it. The heirs turned him down but it made him even more determined to buy that house for the lowest price possible. Trump decided to buy the land that was located between Mar-a-Largo and the ocean while publicly announcing his intention to build a building on that land that would be tall enough to obstruct Mar-a-Largo's views of the ocean. The threat caused the value of the property to decline so the heirs capitulated. They ultimately sold Mar-a-Largo to Trump at the lower price of $7 million.
Basically Donald Trump has violated nine out of ten commandments, which makes his Bible hawking so pathetic along with his fake piety. I could spend a huge amount of time combing through both the Old and New Testaments finding other verses that I am sure that Trump has violated throughout his life. As this post by middleageriot puts it: “Buying a Bible from Donald Trump is like getting heart surgery from an eighth-grade biology class.”
Despite being a less-than-pious Christian I'm sure that he'll get his hardcore supporters to ignore the numerous sins he has committed over the years and buy a few copies of that Bible. If you’re interested in obtaining your very own copy of this Trump Bible, you can order one (or more) right here and risk being ridiculed by others who will send you memes that say stuff like “If you are buying a Bible from a guy who had an affair with a porn star while his wife was at home with their newborn child…YOU MUST BE A SPECIAL KIND OF STUPID!”
If my ex-husband's late stepfather was still alive today, would he have added this Bible to his collection? I can't say for sure. During the times when I used to visit him he never once indicated that he was a fan of Donald Trump's nor was he a major fan of Lee Greenwood's because he didn't like country music. (Like I wrote earlier, he only listened to classical music.) The last time I saw him in person was in January, 2011 before my marriage fell apart later that year just a few days after Christmas. (It was also the same year that Donald Trump had flirted with the idea of running in the Republican primary but he ultimately decided to focus on continuing to host his reality TV show instead.) He probably would have either not bothered out of the principal that buying that particular Bible would be giving money to Donald Trump or he might have held his nose and bought a copy for the novelty of having documents like the US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence included in that particular Bible.
