Death of a Chilean American-Born Antivaxxer, Misogynist, Antisemite, and Russian Propagandist in a Ukrainian Prison

Good riddance to bad rubbish

If you’re relatively new to the issues related to Kremlin propaganda and how it’s affecting other countries (including the United States), I recommend reading some background posts I wrote that explains things in more detail along with links to other sites where you can read more to educate yourself.

Gonzalo Lira, a notorious Chilean American propagandist for Russia has recently died in a Ukrainian jail at the age of 55. Lira was a grifter who initially tried to make it as a novelist then as a filmmaker but he failed at both. Then he tried writing freelance articles claiming to be an economic expert but that career was also short lived. Then he pivoted to YouTube where he fashioned himself as Coach Red Pill, a relationship expert providing advice to young men about getting the right kind of woman (the younger the better–he actually advised men to never date a woman over 30) who is pretty and submissive. He also spread COVID-19 conspiracy theories while calling himself a “pureblood” because he never got vaccinated against that virus.

He eventually moved to Ukraine where he settled in Kharkiv. There are some people claiming on Twitter/X that he had gone there to take advantage of young impoverished Ukrainian women for his own self-gratification while continuing with making new videos for his Gonzalo Lira - Again YouTube channel.

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Lira pivoted from being a relationship expert to taking Russia’s side in the war, where he posted about things like alleging that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a cocaine addict. He remained in Ukraine while he was posting his pro-Kremlin propaganda on YouTube. He was finally arrested when he was caught passing Ukrainian military information to Russia. He was initially released on bail but was arrested again when he attempted to cross the border into Hungary while documenting that attempt on YouTube.

While in prison he caught double pneumonia in the lungs and that is what killed him. The pro-Russian accounts on Twitter/X are claiming that President Zelenskyy has blood on his hands for Lira's death. But I also read claims that Lira was a chain smoker and the fact that he felt that he was too much of a “pureblood” to get vaccinated against COVID-19 probably didn't help. (As of this writing it’s unknown whether COVID-19 caused his pneumonia or if it was caused by something else.)

The above tweet includes an image of Lira wearing a cast on his arm that has an antisemitic statement written on it.

In his relatively short life Gonzalo Lira did attract his share of likeminded fans who have made their own tributes to him. The worst of the bunch is the one that compares Lira with Anne Frank, the Jewish teenage diarist who lost her life in the Holocaust.

Given his antivaxxer ideology, his antisemitism, his misogyny, and his pro-Russia stance, Lira was basically a garbage human who won't be missed much by those who value freedom and equality. You can learn more about the life of Gonzalo Lira in this entry on the Vatnik Soup website.
