Day One of That Train Wreck in Wisconsin
Trump found a new sucker to serve as his vice president while the convention is turned into a clown show
I shouldn’t be surprised that the Republican National Committee Convention is living up to its potential as a train wreck. After all, Donald Trump has completely remade the RNC in his image and the longtime establishment Republicans like Mitch McConnell are doing nothing to stand up to him.
I’m pretty well-versed in right-wing train wrecks. I live in Maryland where CPAC has long held its annual convention at National Harbor where each year it seems to draw the lunatics. The RNC Convention in Wisconsin is heading in the same way.
As many of you may already know, Donald Trump went into the convention a couple of days after that assassination attempt that turned into something totally bizarre.
Trump also went into the convention needing a new vice president since the last one who served alongside him, Mike Pence, has declined to endorse him or even be associated with him in any way. In a way you can’t blame Pence. After all, it was on January 6, 2021 when Donald Trump held that rally that turned into a riot on the US Capitol building and he pretty much blamed Pence for not doing anything to ensure that Trump will remain in the White House despite losing the election to Joe Biden. That led to a mob storming the Capitol chanting “HANG MIKE PENCE!!!” and someone had even erected gallows outside of that building.
But yesterday Trump had found a replacement for Mike Pence. Current US senator and Hillbilly Elegy author J.D. Vance had decided to run in the vice president slot despite what happened to his predecessor in that role. The biggest irony is that Vance had originally styled himself as a principled “Never Trump” Republican but, over time, he sold out his principles to become a Trump sycophant. To understand that change, check out this video from The Lincoln Project, which compiled past quotes from J.D. Vance regarding his concerns about Donald Trump back in 2016.
Trump’s favorite authoritarian dictator, Vladimir Putin, probably approves of this because J.D. Vance has said that he opposed to military aid to Ukraine, which is similar to Trump’s stance on Ukraine. Despite their similar stance on Ukraine, I don’t see this ending very well for J.D. Vance to be honest. Trump has a long history of blaming others when something goes wrong and you know that if Trump loses in November, he’ll try to blame Vance for this. Even if Trump does regain the White House, there will eventually be something that will come between the two of them and Vance will have a hard time with staying in Trump’s good graces. J.D. Vance will eventually regret selling out his principles to Donald Trump.
As for the first day of that convention, it’s a total train wreck as expected. How bad was it? The Lincoln Project has put together a compilation of the highlights (or should they be called lowlights) of that convention that will have your jaws dropping open.
And to think this circus will be going on for the next few days as we see grown adults make utter fools of themselves and they don’t care.
